Hilo Farmers Markets Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables
I was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii and approximately 41,000 people presently call Hilo their home. It rains almost every day in Hilo making the land and soil fertile, just stick it in the ground and it grows. Fruits, tropical flowers and vegetables are seen almost everywhere you turn. Each weekend farmers markets spring up with vendors selling their home grown products.
I was recently in Hilo and spent some time with family and of course, shopping. My favorite Farmers Market in Hilo is the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers market on Kinoole Street. Directions
Here people purchase flowers to adorn their homes, give as gifts or place on their loved ones graves. I purchased a couple dozen anthuriums to place on my parents grave sites and take to several family members that I was visiting.

My most favorite flower is the obake anthurium. Anthuriums are actually green but hybridization has produced color varieties of many forms and shapes. Obake in Japanese means ghost.
The vendors at the farmers market also sell Ti leaf plants, Cymbidium Orchids, Dendrobium Orchids, Proteas, Roses and Birds of Paradise.

Guavas, mangos and avacados are plentiful.

Huge tomatoes

Lychees are just getting into season.
Organically grown papayas

Big Island chips, candy and popcorn

Next time you are in Hawaii, be sure to visit Hilo and check out any one of the many farmers markets. Islanders will welcome you with genuine Hilo hospitality. From this Hilo wahine transplanted in Arizona, ALOHA!

WHAT'S YOUR LEGACY?
My sister was laid to rest yesterday. I read her obituary just before leaving for her memorial service. It read that she was a "private babysitter". A private baby sitter, is that all she did in her short life of 58 years? She was a wife, mother and sister.
Most people would think that a "private babysitter" would not make an impact in this life. I knew differently and my impressions were quickly confirmed during her memorial service.
The children came. Of all ages, they came. I can safely guess about 30 or 40 came. Lots of young people were there. It was really nice. Some children came with their parents. Parents came by themselves saying that their child was away at college. Teenagers and young adults came by themselves to pay their respect. I heard a wide array of positive comments that placed a respect that was certainly earned. Your sister took me to my soccer practices and cheered me on. She loved me like my mom. She would rock me to sleep. She'd pick up my son, bathe him and take him take care of him until I got from work. Almost all said, she was a good loving person.
The end is final. The primary most important thing that we leave this universe with is our legacy. It's all about having a positive recognition, placing a small indent in this community we call world, treating others with love and respect, and most of all, being kind.

The Buyer's Market: It's Over-Rated
This afternoon I visited with a client who works for a large corporation. He said that many of his fellow employees were placing low-ball offers on short sales and lender owned properties. They couldn't understand why the banks were not accepting their offers, after all, they had heard and read that it's a buyers market.
The media has been telling us it's a buyer market for some time. The real estate community talks about it too. Everyone seems to believe it.
I think the Buyer's Market is over-rated.
Before you get your britches in a bunch, hear me out.
- Saying it's a buyer's market, as a general rule, overlooks those markets, and niches, where this is clearly not the case.
- Calling it a buyer's market gives buyers a false sense of security. They think they are always in the driver's seat, calling all the shots, and can get homes for 10%, 20% or more off the market value. Not always so.
- It suggests that homes are sitting around waiting for buyers (yep there are plenty out there) to make any offer, and that sellers are desperate and will relinquish their homes for whatever the buyers are willing to pay. Buyers won't have to compete, and they can afford to take their time making a decision since inventory isn't moving until the buyers make it move. Again, not always so.
Granted, there are plenty of markets where the inventory is high and the demand low, where buyers can be pretty choosy, and prices are still falling. Some markets are pretty crappy right now. I remember being told that less than 6 months inventory was a seller's market, 6 months or so was a balanced market, and 8 or more months indicated a buyer's market - it was in a CRS class, and I think NAR also cites these numbers. Perhaps. But it ain't that simple. Not anymore.
It seems that "Buyer's Market" just doesn't work all that well to classify our current market, perhaps the most difficult in decades, except in the most general sort of way. And it deludes buyers in some market areas and niches (e.g., the least expensive homes or REOs) into thinking they will get a great deal...easily, with little effort and on their terms.
Consider the REOs - we now see many offers (sometimes 15-20) on these, often within a day of the home coming on the market, and commonly many are over asking price (maybe not true in your area but becoming far more common here in SoCal). As someone with multiple buyers who have been through this drill several times and who are frustrated, and disappointed...is this niche a buyer's market? Nope, at least not in their minds.
And how about non-distress homes we are seeing with multiple offers. I had one just a few weeks ago (within 24 hours there were well more than 10 offers, many over asking - fortunately my buyers lucked out, but the sellers had the luxury of picking which offer they wanted to pursue). And it's happening elsewhere...an article in the Los Angeles Times makes this point very clear.
We need to truly understand our particularly markets and individual niches so we do not mislead buyers into a false sense of security or have them make decisions based on misinformation. If we can't communicate what is going on we lose credibility, and aren't providing any greater value to buyers than when they simply make decisions based on what they read in the papers.
Calling it a buyer's market is the easy way out. Everyone "knows" what you mean, and you don't have to understand the realities of the market nor explain it when folks ask.
I still say the buyer's market is over-rated! I suspect some folks may agree.

I Want To Make It RAIN Socks In Raynham! Will You Help?
When my children were little, they would ask me what I wanted for Christmas or Mother's Day. I would always say socks. Socks because they are inexpensive, have a wide variety that causes the child to think about their selection.
Sharon has shared an excellent way to get children and parents involved in a charitable organization at a minimal cost.
Want to feel real good and smile all day...here's what you do. The next time you are in a store, find cute little children's socks and buy a pair or two.
A friend of mine, Carol Measor, is the Director for Children's Development Center in Raynham, Massachusetts. She is on a mission with a wonderful charitable cause she heard about on the radio. It touched her heart the minute she heard it, so she sent out an email asking for help from everyone she knows.
She is collecting socks for children in need. Imagine if we all sent just one pair of socks...
Lets make it RAIN socks in Raynham!
If you have children, this could be a great thing to do with them. They could do an extra chore for a family member or neighbor and earn a dollar.
They can choose a pair of socks at the dollar store and learn what it feels like to give and help others.
This will warm your heart along with warming the feet of children.
Please pass this along to others, whom you think may like to help.
Carol's last cause was collecting books for Africa and she has collected over 900 books so far and will be sending them to Africa the end of the Summer. If you would prefer to send a book, she is still collecting them, too.
Send socks and/or books to:
Carol Measor
Children's Development Center
473 South Street West
Raynham, MA 02767
You can call her at (508) 828-1118 for more information.
For such a small amount of money, we could make such a big difference!

The media has been telling us it's a buyer market for some time. The real estate community talks about it too. Everyone seems to believe it.
