I was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii and approximately 41,000 people presently call Hilo their home. It rains almost every day in Hilo making the land and soil fertile, just stick it in the ground and it grows. Fruits, tropical flowers and vegetables are seen almost everywhere you turn. Each weekend farmers markets spring up with vendors selling their home grown products.
I was recently in Hilo and spent some time with family and of course, shopping. My favorite Farmers Market in Hilo is the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers market on Kinoole Street. Directions
Here people purchase flowers to adorn their homes, give as gifts or place on their loved ones graves. I purchased a couple dozen anthuriums to place on my parents grave sites and take to several family members that I was visiting.

My most favorite flower is the obake anthurium. Anthuriums are actually green but hybridization has produced color varieties of many forms and shapes. Obake in Japanese means ghost.
The vendors at the farmers market also sell Ti leaf plants, Cymbidium Orchids, Dendrobium Orchids, Proteas, Roses and Birds of Paradise.

Guavas, mangos and avacados are plentiful.

Huge tomatoes

Lychees are just getting into season.
Organically grown papayas

Big Island chips, candy and popcorn

Next time you are in Hawaii, be sure to visit Hilo and check out any one of the many farmers markets. Islanders will welcome you with genuine Hilo hospitality. From this Hilo wahine transplanted in Arizona, ALOHA!

OK I live in Libby Montana and it is very beautiful here but your farmers market makes me want to hop over and pick a few things up. I imagine people are pretty healthy in your area.
Thanks Liz
looks good enough to smell or eat, Thanks for sharing. It will be a few months before we have fresh produce, I'm envious.
Liz, I just love the Big Island farmers market!
Caron, Hilo is a great place to relax and enjoy the tropical flowers and fruit.
The triopical flowers are beautiful and I know the fruit is yummy. Have a great day.
Connie, I truly love coming back to my little grass shack. Hilo was a wonderful place to grow up in.
Looovve Lychee....I need to find a good vendor....hmmm.. farmers markets ...kam swap meet.
Those are beautiful! I've never seen anything like that around here. Our Flea and Farmer's Market doesn't even have a flower isle... at least I don't think so. The darn thing covers 3 acres, but I've definitely never seen flowers. Regardless, your photos are fantastic! I love this. I'm going to feature it in the Things to Do/Places to Visit group =)
Sally, the lychees were so sweet. Too bad I cannot take them back to Arizona.
Lisa, Hilo is known for its beautiful flowers. Greenry everywhere you go, with flowers in almost every yard. The farmers market brings out the best of the best. Thank you for featuring this post. I appreciate your kindness.
My favorite thing to get at this farmer's market is the andagi. YUM! Then I go to Kawate's Seed Shop across the parking lot to get a gravy burger & orange bang. MMM!!
Larkin, we've probably run into each other at Kawate's.
